19th Sept - Mountain Bike Orienteering - Erik Skovgaard Knudsen, Denmark, the current leader in the men’s World Cup standings by a large margin, extended his lead and was crowned European Sprint Champion today with victory by 9 seconds. Marika Hara, Finland, previously joint leader in the women’s standings, is European Champion with a win also by 9 seconds. see IOF http://orienteering.org
18th Sept - Road Running- Kenya's Martin Mathathi and
Lucy Kabuu were in a class of their own as they won at the Great North
Run half Marathon on Tyneside, England.
Mathathi - world 10,000m bronze medalist in 2007 and
holder of the world junior 10 mile record with 44m51s, became one of only
six men to run inside 59m for the distance. On what is admitted to be a
down hill course he finished well clear of the opposition in a course record
breaking 58m56s.
Kabuu made an early move and was never troubled. She
crossed the line in 65m06s, the third fastest for the course behind
Paula Radcliffe.
15th Sept - Orienteering - Double world title holder
Thierry Gueorgiou is looking forward to next week's World Cup event
in Liberec where Saturday's middle distance will decide the chasing start
in Sunday's long distance.
"It looks to be a great terrain", he says "I don't know
yet how (fit I'll feel) when I show up
in Czech Republic..... but I'll try to get a good start
with the middle distance as the course setters in Czech are always good
at
making orienteering challenges. Then I will give my all
for the chase start. I think it is going to be fun and I looking forward
to it!”
13the Sept - Orienteering - Finland's Minni Kaupi says
she is out to put a bad season beind her when she runs in the world cup
in the Czech Republic in 9 days time. "Usually have been quite tired
of orienteering after WOC", she says, " but as the season has been so hard
I'm more than motivated to get back in my best form and I think it's possible
to get the form before Liberec.
I want to do best possible performances on all disciplines.
Of course, the middle is my favorite, but this time I'm really waiting
all the
competitions with hunger.”
11th Sept Orienteering - Swedish Championships - It was the duel of the champions. World middle distance champion Helena Jansson beat world long champion Annika Billstam to win the Swedish long distance title finishing over two minutes up with her time of 1h 21m 05s for 8.8km.
11th Sept. Orienteering - Danish Long Distance Championships - Emerging star Signe Soes came out of top in a battle with Alm Maja to take her National title by 1m49s with her time of 1h13m 28s for 11.8km.
10th Sept Mari Fasting (NTNUI) made it two out of
two at the Norwegian Championships as she added the middle distance title
to her long distance success on Thursday. She finished over half a minute
clear with a time of 35m59s for 4.4km.
National team runner, Lars Skjetset (FROL) beat 2010
world champion Carl Waller Kaas into second by just one second as he won
the men's 5.8km event in 36m47s.
8th Sept Norway's 2010 world orienteering champion Olav
Lundanes (Halden) won his national long distance title today (Thursday).
Clocking 6:44 per km he finished the 16.7km course in 1h32m45s to finish
3:44 clear of the opposition.
Mari Fasting (NTNUI), the 2005 world junior champion
who finished overall 6th in this year's Nordic Tour, continued her return
to form by taking the women's title 2:46 clear with her time of 1h 09m
26s.
7th Sept Albania hosts its first international sports
championship this weekend as the World Mountain Running Trophy is staged
in the capital Tirana.
Africans have dominated the men's championship in the
past two years winning all three individual medals and team gold.
On Sunday, the men's 12.7km course takes in three laps
of a heavily forested cicuit on a 323m summit on the edge of the city climbing
799m in total.
The women run 8.59km climbing 547m.
4th Sept - Double indivdual world champion Thierry Gueorgiou
(France) added the Finnish long distance title to his world successes of
last month competing today (Sunday) but it was a near thing.
Running for Finland club Kavelan Rasti, Gueorgiou, who
won the long and middle distance world championships on home soil, some
two weeks ago, before anchoring his national team to the relay title,
ran a fast 1h 28m 56s for the 16.7km coures to finish just six seconds
up on 2009 national team runner, Topi Anjala.
Problems continued for long time women's number one Minna
Kaupi. In France, Kaupi, favourite for the women's long distance title
dropped out after she failed to find the first control.
Today, Kaupi, who missed out on training earier this
year due to illness, was beaten into second by Merja Ratanen who won long
bronze at the Worlds..
